Tummy Tuck Sydney

Trim and tone

An abdominoplasty, popularly known as a tummy tuck, is a routine cosmetic surgical procedure that will remove the excess fat and skin from the lower abdomen and leave you with a flatter, firmer stomach. A slender stomach is highly desired by both men and women which is why we are happy to offer this procedure at our plastic surgery clinic.

Tummy tucks are suitable for most people who want a more contoured figure and want to tighten their stomach muscles and remove excess skin and fat. Typically unwanted skin and weakened muscles can be caused by pregnancy, weight-loss and the natural ageing process. All of these can leave behind sags and folds that just won’t spring back into shape regardless of the diet or exercise regime you may follow.

"My personal approach to abdominoplasty aims to give you the very best possible tummy. This involves a tiny, almost scarless belly button and a low-set scar that can be concealed in modern underwear, swim wear and clothing. Wherever possible I also include liposculpture to the ‘muffin top’ or flank area to accentuate a woman’s profile at the same time. These areas can be difficult to target through diet and exercise alone. I use routinely use quilting stitches internally to minimise the length of time my patients have drains and the latest Pain-Buster anaesthetic pump device. This local anesthetic infusion device has revolutionised my patient care with the vast majority not needing anything more than panadol in the first few days post-op. This means a lower reliance on drugs that can cause nausea as well as abdominal bloating, sleepiness and discomfort." - Dr Alex Phoon

Treatment Options

There are two types of tummy tuck and both are performed under a general anaesthetic. When we talk to you we can advise which one is most suitable: this depends largely on how much skin and fat you need to have removed.

Depending on the type of surgery the procedure can take up to three hours.

Full abdominoplasty

This is required if you have excessive fat deposit and a drop in the underlying muscle and skin layer. It requires an incision from hip to hip, just above the pubic area. The abdominal skin is lifted, and the abdominal muscles, which can be separated as a result of pregnancy or weakened by age, are tightened. Excess fat and skin is removed and, as the skin is replaced, the belly button is recreated in an aesthetically pleasing location.

Mini abdominoplasty

This is available should you have good muscle tone and just need some excess skin removing. It requires a lesser incision, and a slighter removal and dissection process. Due to this there is no need to reposition the belly button. The final scar is, inevitably, smaller.

The effects of both types of abdominoplasty can be optimised through liposuction.

There are times when the best result may be achieved with a combination of treatments. This can often be liposuction.

Liposuction can remove stubborn pockets of fat which will aid the contoured result of your surgery. It helps achieve an exceptionally sleek stomach and refine the shape of the flanks and hips to deliver a youthful and confident midsection.

Sometimes it may even be possible to offer you the less invasive option of VASER liposuction rather than abdominoplasty. This will depend on the amount of skin and fat that you have, and your desired result. You will always be offered the most suitable option for what you need to realise your goals.

"Mummy Makeover" Tummy Tuck + Breast Augmentation

Breast Treatments

The most common procedure combined with a tummy tuck is a breast procedure.

This can be breast augmentation, a breast reduction or a breast lift with an implant.

Just like preparing for your tummy tuck we will use the 3D Vectra technology to predict and plan the breast treatment to ensure the best results possible.

It is best to wait at least six months after breast feeding before considering breast surgery.

The Procedure

What is 3D Vectra Scanning?

At Park Clinic Plastic Surgery in Sydney we offer revolutionary scanning technology to build a 3D computer mold of your body. Once this has been captured (via very fast, discrete imaging) you will sit with your doctor to discuss the changes that can be made to your tummy. This will be shown on the screen using the 3D scan of you and will show you predicted results of the treatment in real time.

Will a Tummy Tuck remove my stretch marks?

Stretch marks are caused by tears in the thicker layer of your skin, often caused my excessive stretch such as during pregnancy.

Unfortunately there is nothing that will repair the tears however some treatments do work to change the colour of the marks left to reduce the appearance of stretch marks.

While they cannot be fixed, many stretch marks at the bottom of the tummy are removed during a tummy tuck resulting in an improvement in the contour and shape of your tummy, as well as the texture of the skin.

What to Expect

The tummy tuck procedure will result in a smoother and firmer belly, but it is important to stress that it is not a weight loss operation, and should not be considered a suitable treatment for obesity.

Procedure: You will be placed under general anaesthetic for the operation so that you remain comfortable throughout the procedure. During the procedure excess skin will be removed from your abdomen and your abdomen muscles may be tightened to maintain elasticity after the procedure.

Description: During surgery your stomach will be contoured, firmed and flattened by removing excess fat and skin in order to tighten the muscles and tissues of your abdominal area.

Recovery: Depending on the type of procedure you require your hospital stay can range from one to three nights. It should be expected that you will need between two to four weeks of recovery time away from work. You should also be able to maintain your results as long as you maintain a healthy lifestyle.

In this short video Park Clinic’s abdominoplasty specialist Dr Phoon discusses how 3D imaging is used to help you visualise how your tummy will look after surgery, shows you how our consultation process works, takes you through the procedure itself and you can see for yourself the resultant confidence that many gain from it.

Will I need rehabilitation after surgery?

Yes. To put it simply your body will need rehabilitation after the treatment as you restrengthen and condition your tummy.
After your two week rest period we strongly recommend you undergo Pilates training.

Park Clinic Plastic Surgery has partnered up with some instructors to provide one-on-one classes to get you back into shape after surgery.

This is to support lengthening and straightening your figure as well as strengthening your core muscles.

What does the treatment cost?

The costs of your tummy tuck will vary depending on your needs. The costs are likely to range from $14000-$18000. In some cases, a tummy tuck is covered by private healthcare insurance policies. Patients are encouraged to check their eligibility by reviewing their policy in full.

The factors that determine the final cost may include:

  • Anaesthetist’s fee
  • Private hospital or overnight surgical facility fees
  • Post-operative garments
  • Length of hospital stay required
  • Insurance coverage
  • Surgical assistant’s fee
  • Additional body contouring procedures that can be carried out simultaneously, such as labiaplasty, liposuction, thigh lift or arm lift

What are the benefits of a Tummy Tuck?

Although tummy tucks are not a treatment for obesity they are extremely effective in removing the excess skin that can be left behind after significant weight loss. In this recent ACA news feature Dr Phoon discusses the benefits of abdominoplasty for Amy, a Sydney resident who has achieved an incredible loss of weight.
